The Tai Chi Yang Style Short Form

THE FORM

The Tai Chi form consists of a series
of movements and positions that are
performed in a defined sequence.

Each move has a distinctive and
appropriate name, which aids the
learning process and helps to
memorise the form.

Although the learning process is not
something to be rushed, a basic
understanding of the form can be
gained over a matter of months and
perfected over a number of years.

TAI CHI AS A MARTIAL ART

It is good to remember that Tai Chi
was at the beginning of a Martial Art.
All the moves have a defensive and
offensive application. To understand
the way a move is weighted, your
instructor may add the Martial Art
usage during a class.

POSTURE

The Form should ideally be performed
with a straight back at all times.

The shoulders relaxed and the head
held up as though it is suspended
from a thread.

The weight should be slightly forward
on the balls of the feet and the
knees slightly bent.

BREATH

The pace and movement of the Form
can be greatly enhanced by
synchronising the in and out breaths
with the movement of the body.

To perfect a natural rhythm is
something to aspire to since it can
take much practice.
